3 Common Ways to Find a Legitimate Home Business Opportunity

The difficulty in working from home is not in finding a job; instead, it’s in finding a legitimate home business opportunity. For every genuine home based career you find, there are half a dozen scams that you must avoid. So how can you tell which jobs are real, and which ones are complete cons?

There are actually 3 common ways that people search for jobs, and for each method you can find a way to check up on the company and make sure it’s legitimate before signing on:

1.    Ask Among Friends

Most people begin their new career searches by asking among friends and family. For example, if you have a loved one who has recently seized upon a legitimate home business opportunity, you might decide that you could follow in his or her footsteps.

In fact, many home based businesses offer rewards or bonuses to employees who recruit more members to the company. So if you follow this model, you both benefit: you get to join a company you trust, because you already know someone who works there; and your friend or relative gets monetary compensation for recruiting you.

However, you should be wary of every company until you have thoroughly checked it out. Just because a friend works there is no guarantee that it’s a lawful corporation. Check with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer watchdog groups if you are unsure of whether the company is truly legitimate. It’s much better to do some checking up before joining than to rush headlong into a questionable organization.

2.    Run an Internet Search

Another common way to search for a job is through the Internet, which has become a kind of group clearinghouse for some of the best, successful home business organizations currently on the market. Run a search on a term like “successful home business idea” and you will get hundreds of leads. These organizations sell products ranging from cosmetics to kitchen knives and everything in between. Chances are there is a company out there that is selling something that makes you feel excited and interested in selling it yourself.

Just as you would check up on a recommended company, you should run a similar search on any Internet-based home business opportunity. Even a judicious Google search on the company’s name will turn up any bad press or complaints on consumer watchdog forums. If a company seems to gather a lot of poor reviews from former employees, you will probably do better to find a different one.

3.    Find a Mentor

Finally, one not-so-common, but helpful way to track down a new career is to work with a business mentor. A mentor is someone who has years of experience in the business world, and can bring the wealth of his knowledge to your present situation. This kind of relationship can be extremely helpful if you don’t know what career path to pursue, or what the best home business idea would be.

Mentors are useful at helping you get started in the home business world, and they can help you assess if an opportunity is legitimate or not. This kind of one-on-one interaction can be beneficial as you make the transition from traditional workplace to working from home full-time.
